Special Campaign to Mark the 60th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 2008
The year 2007 has become memorable for various reasons. The event has become a historic milestone in humanity's quest for global nonviolence with the United Nations declaring Gandhi Jayanti, Oct 2, 2007 as the International Day of Non-Violence. This event also coincides with the 150th anniversary of the First War of India's Independence, 1857; 60th Anniversary of India's Independence; 100th Anniversary of Satyagraha and the 60th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 2008.
It was 60 years back that the United Nations paid tribute to the Mahatma on his martyrdom on January 30, 1948. The UN flag flew half-mast. And after 60 years, India proposed a resolution to the United Nations to declare October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence. The proposal was accepted by 142 countries and October 2, 2007 was celebrated the world over as the International Day of Non-Violence.
Offering tributes to the Mahatma on hearing the news of his death, Albert Einstein's said: "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one in flesh and blood ever walked on this earth".
January 30, 2008 marks the 60th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi.
Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, the National Memorial of Mahatma Gandhi to mark the 60 th anniversary has initiated a SPECIAL CAMPAIGN seeking opinions from people from different sections of the society.
The Campaign seeks to know and gather the information on what the world community feels about the life's message and the Martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi – the epic life which ended at Gandhi Smriti, 5 Tees January Marg on Friday , January 30, 1948.
